7 Home Organization Hacks That Really Work

February 19, 2025

We have all had enough of this snow! As the sun stays out longer every night, it’s time to get your home ready for spring cleaning with these 10 organization hacks that will really make a difference.

  1. Divide & Conquer – Instead of trying to filter through all your clutter one by one, which can feel overwhelming, start by organizing everything into bigger categories. For example, get all your office supplies together first, and then you’ll know if you have too many staplers or three half empty boxes of pens. It will be easier to consolidate and organize from there.
  2. Find Your Own System – We all see perfectly organized basements on Instagram and think “I could do that!”, but it’s important to find a system that works for you. Do perfectly pristine white boxes with labels work, or do you need clear bins so you can see what’s inside? Focus on the functionality of your system and not just aesthetics, or your stuff won’t stay organized after you take your photos.
  3. Order of Operations – Making your home more organized is step one, keeping it that way is an ongoing battle. One important tip is to make your daily use items most accessible, and your irregular items less accessible. If you try to hide your daily pills, glasses, or chargers in your nightstand drawer, they’re likely to end up clutter on top of your nightstand from daily use. Instead find a nice tray to set them on or a discreet way to organize your charging cord so they can stay out and still be organized.
  4. Parting with Clothes – It’s the hardest part, but you need to part with your clutter to feel less cluttered! One way to know what clothes you’re really wearing is by turning all your hangers backwards in your closet. Then after some time, take note of what hangers are still facing the wrong way. You can probably get rid of those items or store them away.
  5. Avoiding Gimmicks – When looking online for hacks and systems, look out for products meant to ‘transform your space’. You do not need a bunch of excess items to add to your clutter, find a simple storage system that works for you and stick with it.
  6. Double Up – If you’re someone who struggles to find motivation, know where to start, or gets distracted easily, you might find having someone in your space helps. Even if they are not actually organizing with you, just their presence can be a motivator. If you don’t have anyone to call on, you can find videos online meant just for this purpose. It’s amazing how much watching someone on your TV organize can inspire you to do the same. Check out this creator!
  7. You See it, You Own it – This hack is helpful if you’re in a shared living space, but only if everyone is following it. We all have moments we are in a rush or feeling forgetful, so the paper towel roll stays empty or your water glass doesn’t get put away. “You see it, You own it” means as soon as you notice something is empty, out of place, or disorganized, it’s now your job to fix it, even if you weren’t the one to cause the mess. The more you just ignore something out of place, the quicker your home becomes disorganized.

Happy Spring Cleaning! These hacks will elevate and optimize your weekend plans. Make sure you reward yourself with a treat at the end of it all too!
