The weather is getting warmer, days are getting longer, and everyone is getting antsy during the day working inside.  A fun and free way to get the whole family involved in an outside summer activity, that can include your furry friends, is going to a local pet-friendly park, trail, or beach for a few hours.  There are various options for this activity throughout the Capital Region. Take a look at some of these options below!

Dog-Friendly Picnic- A great place to go and bring a picnic on a nice summer day is Congress Park located in downtown Saratoga Springs.  This pet-friendly location is perfect for your family to relax and spend time together on a warm day. You can appreciate the mineral heavy spring water located at various fountains throughout the park, while also taking in the beautiful landscape filled with trees and flowers lining the paths.  A bonus to this location is the historic wooden carousel which is open during the day for all ages to enjoy all summer long!

Dog Parks Galore- If you’re looking for some “dog focused” spots to spend a few hours, there are some outstanding dog parks located throughout the Capital Region that might call your name.  Westland Hills and Hartman Road Dog Parks located in Albany, as well as Saratoga Springs Dog Park, are a few options of a location that will surely be filled with dogs looking to play.  Hartman Road is one that has great reviews due to the utilized space for pups to play, as well as the trails for both the dogs and their owners to take a stroll.  It is located off exit 4 on I-87 in Albany, adjacent to the community garden.  Make sure to bring some treats and water wherever you go, the dogs will be tired after a long day of playing in the sun!

Dog Beach- If a dog park isn’t screaming your name, Lake George has a dog-friendly beach that your dog, as well as yourself, will most definitely love!  Throw frisbees into the beautiful, blue waters and watch your pup have the time of its life.  Keep this location saved for those hot, sunny days when you want to relish the outdoors, yet be able to stay cool and refreshed whenever you feel like jumping in the lake! The park is located off exit 21 on I-87, within walking distance of The Village of Lake George.  There will be plenty of room for your dog to play in and out of the water, and a place for you to relax in the grass or sand.

Adventure in the ADKs- For all you active dog owners, there are many dog friendly hiking trails throughout the Adirondacks that you might consider on your next adventure.  Some of these areas offer an abundance of trails that stretch hundreds of miles, leaving dog-owners with plenty of options. Take note of the weather before picking a day to bring your dog along on the trails, and use your best judgement based on their breed and condition. Make sure to bring a leash and follow all guidelines for hiking with a pet to keep yourself, dog, and others safe in the experience!
