4 Local Charities to Support on #GivingTuesday
The holiday season kicks off with Black Friday and Cyber Monday, days dedicated to shopping for those near and dear to you. However, the holiday season is also the time of year to give to those in need. Giving Tuesday is a global movement formed from the idea to “help others and incentivize ways to give more, give smarter, and celebrate the spirit of generosity through charitable contributions and volunteerism.” We here at Julie & Co. Realty support many important causes year-round, especially in the local area. Please read on for 4 local charities that we support that could use your help this #GivingTuesday.
Equine Advocates
Founded in 1996, Equine Advocates is now a nationally recognized and award-winning non-profit that rescues equines from slaughter, abuse, and neglect. Over 80 equines rescued reside on a 140-acre sanctuary in Chatham. Equine Advocates also offers humane education for the public to, “learn about equine issues, responsible horse guardianship, humane horse handling, natural horsemanship, and many other important subjects that affect the welfare of our equine friends.” Equines are a large part of Saratoga and the Greater Capital Region’s culture and if you share a compassion for rescuing these animals, visit Equine Advocates’ website to see all the ways you can support its cause.
Saratoga Hospital Foundation
Saratoga Hospital is the main resource for people seeking medical care in Saratoga County. The Saratoga Hospital Foundation is the “philanthropic arm of the Saratoga Hospital [and] secures, manages, and distributes gifts to support the mission of Saratoga Hospital and all of our facilities.” Its philanthropic programs include “an annual campaign, memorial gifts, special events, major gifts, capital campaigns, and planned giving.” Donations help more than just the organizations of Saratoga Hospital, they provide care for those in the community that need it. With Saratoga Hospital recently being named “Best Regional Hospital” by U.S. News & World Report, you know your contribution is providing important help for those in need. Saratoga Sponsor-A-Scholar
Saratoga Sponsor-A-Scholar helps financially-disadvantaged students in the Saratoga Springs School District complete their high school and college education. Each year, 10 high school sophomores are chosen to participate in the 7-year long program. They’re assigned a mentor and are provided with, “school supplies, weekly structured study sessions, tutoring, PSAT and SAT training courses, study skills classes, exam fees for Advanced Placement courses, and numerous college visits.” They’re also provided counseling for college preparation. Skidmore College also lends its support by allowing students to visit its campus and meet with current college students. Participants in the program have their academic performance monitored weekly and are active in community activities. This program is a great opportunity for students who need a hand up. Visit Saratoga Sponsor-A-Scholar’s website for more information on how to donate or mentor a student.
Universal Preservation Hall
Universal Preservation Hall, located in a former Methodist church in Downtown Saratoga Springs, is a performing arts education and entertainment venue. Its mission is to “provide and preserve a historic venue for performing arts, cultural, educational, and community events, to promote and enhance the economic vitality of the greater Saratoga Springs region, and to serve citizens of that region through the use of its facilities for appropriate events.” Its building is currently undergoing renovations and is projected to be completed in the Spring of 2020. It recently partnered with Proctors in Schenectady to help with the renovations and to grow “year-round cultural tourism in downtown Saratoga Springs.” However, it still needs resources from the community to work toward its mission.
