Fall in the Capital Region & Adirondacks: Must-See Spots and Foliage Predictions

September 18, 2024

Upstate New York has a lot of beauty to experience, and there is no better time to soak it in than fall. Our beloved Northway is already starting to sport some red & orange hues, and a few leaves even dropped onto my windshield this morning. Foliage peaks align with elevation and weather, so while we can’t totally be sure of when the colors will be their brightest, we can look at past years for an estimate. It’s a general rule of thumb that peaks in the Adirondacks will begin to turn first in early October, and the Hudson Valley will be the last in New York state to see its peak in the end of October. In the Capital Region it’s estimated that we will see our peak in mid-October. Here are some must-see spots in the weeks leading up to that!

Hiking & Walking Trails

It comes as no surprise that the best way to appreciate New York’s foliage is by going on a hike or walk. There are beautiful parks and trails across the Capital Region and Adirondacks, here are some local favorites:

  • John Boyd Thacher State Park: The stunning views of Thacher State Park make you feel like a part of the cliffside. Overlook stunning rock and water formations vignetted by colorful autumn trees.
  • Spring Run Trail: This converted rail trail right in Saratoga offers a meandering path through the foliage.
  • Pilot Knob: This is the perfect hike – a challenging but short climb to outstanding views of Lake George. It’s a must visit in the fall, and very popular. Get there early to secure safe parking!
  • Prospect Mountain: Take a peaceful hike up Prospect for stunning views of the foliage and Lake George and remnants of the historical railway. You can even take a drive up the mountain if you prefer!

Foliage Tours

If you’re looking to learn more about local spots while taking in the foliage, hop on a tour!

  • Dutch Apple Cruises: Take a cruise up the scenic Hudson River via Dutch Apple Cruises. The boat leaves from Albany and takes you on a 90 minute cruise of this gorgeous region.
  • Sun Kiss Ballooning: If you haven’t spent much time in Upstate NY, you may be surprised to know that hot air balloons are a symbol of fall here. It’s because of the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, but more on that later. If you’re looking for the most unique way to see the foliage this year, check out SunKiss Ballooning that does tours all across New York State!
  • Revolution Rail Co.: Hop on a pedal-powered vehicle that rides on old train tracks and take in all of that Adirondack beauty. You can find locations in North Creek, Hadley, and Warrensburg.
