Tips for a Stress-Free Move

March 19, 2021

1. Get Started Early

Do not wait until the last minute to find a mover. As the busy season starts (Mid-May to Mid-September), availability of movers drops, and pricing goes up. Waiting too long to book with a mover will limit your options and can result in disappointment, when it comes to securing the services of the mover of your choice. We recommend four to six weeks before your desired move date. This is so that you can begin contacting moving companies for quotes.

2. Get to Know Your Mover

Ask your mover if they are a part of the Moving & Storage Conference or have ProMover or Certified Moving Consultant status. Scammers would not have proper accreditations and should be avoided. It also is worth checking online reviews and asking friends and family for recommendations.

3. Getting Your Quote

Once you’ve requested a free quote from a moving company, a sales consultant will arrive at your home to gather information. Make sure you show them everything you plan to have moved by the movers and what you don’t. If the mover does not get any surprises, neither will you. (Due to COVID-19, many companies have been using an online video quote tool). Check with your mover if they have additional services that can help with your move including portable and long-term storage, packing services, and customized crating for high value items.

4. Packing

Some companies provide full-service packing of your home which can save you time and stress trying to do it all yourself. If you’re doing the packing, start right away. Even if you don’t know exactly when your move will be, you can begin packing seasonal items and holiday décor; things you won’t need anytime soon. You may also want to consider renting a portable storage unit to help eliminate “clutter” which will help when you go to show your home to potential buyers.

5. Moving Day

Be on-site to help answer any questions your moving team will have and be able to tell them where to place things in your new home. You’ll also want to keep some items with you on moving day to help stay organized and be prepared for anything you may need. Don’t be afraid to ask questions at any point throughout the process. The team is there to assist you in every aspect of the move. They are the professionals, so let them guide you through this journey to make it as stress-free as possible.
